About the Integrated Science Program

The Integrated Science Program (ISP) curriculum was created more than twenty years ago by science educators at the University of California, Berkeley because they believed in the importance of making the sciences accessible and understood to students who do not have a science background. Dr. Vicki Breazeale, Ph.D, the Academic Director for ISP, and one of the original creators of the ISP curriculum, has been involved in the continuous development of this curriculum since its inception.

She has decades of experience as a science educator. Her expertise and philosophy deeply inform the current ISP curriculum and its implementation. For this reason, we feature Dr. Breazeale below so that prospective students may gain a genuine understanding of how ISP enables the learning science effectively and thoroughly.

Vicki Breazeale Ph.D - Academic Director

Academic Director Vicki Breazeale, Ph.D is a science educator and inventor. She has taught biology and ecology in diverse settings to people of all ages for nearly three decades, including lecturing in Biology 1 for majors at University of California, Berkeley for seven years. She also directed an innovative science education program serving pre-health professionals in San Francisco, Los Angeles and St. Louis for 18 years. Vicki has extensive experience in formal and free-choice science curriculum design, implementation and evaluation. For example, Vicki developed and implemented a middle and elementary school curriculum on the natural history and ecology of San Francisco Bay for the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and led nature field trips at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. Vicki was the first person to describe a key allosteric enzyme in the Calvin Cycle of plants: Sedoheptulose 1,7 Bisphosphatase. In 2006, Vicki and her colleagues founded Great Wilderness, a nonprofit with a mission to mission is to support people living in the rich biodiversity of tropical bioregions where the preservation of natural ecosystems is critical to sustaining life. Vicki has a comprehensive knowledge of biology, as well as a detailed understanding of cognitive development and learning theories. She has a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Philosophy of Education
Vicki Breazeale

I believe that the details of biology and ecology expose the fundamental relatedness and interdependence of all living things and that this is the most beautiful insight that the study of nature offers us. It is powerful, comforting, nurturing, and awe inspiring. It also presents an opportunity to develop an ethos that is transcendent and inclusive of all of life, in other words, true respect and love for all creatures great and small.

I also believe that knowledge will set you free and that acquiring knowledge is a life-long process toward freedom; freedom being the ease of movement in any form, domain, or dimension. To me, freedom of thought is the most enduring and life affirming freedom of all. I strongly adhere to the belief that we should all share our knowledge with one another in any way that is humanly possible. Sharing knowledge and the learning process is essential to the realization of the whole of humanity. We are all enhanced by the enlightenment and happiness of others. This is why I teach (try to share the essence of my own education). This is also why I wish you all the educational joy and realization that is possible and hope that I have contributed, however momentarily, to this process for you.

Respectfully,

Vicki Breazeale
