Math (101)

Course Description

Math (101)

Math (101) is a lower division online self-paced course (4 - 6 weeks) with live, online tutoring support. This is a not-for-credit course and is graded only on a pass/fail basis. The Math (101) online course prepares students for the quantitative study of concepts in General Chemistry and Physics.

Topics include:
1) Number relations and functions
2) Composite, polynomial, and rational functions
3) Trigonometry, trigonometric functions, identities and equations
4) Exponential and logarithmic functions
5) Conic sections, and exponential and logarithmic functions
6) Scalars, vectors, polar coordinates and matrices.

This Math (101) class is required as a corequisite class for both General Chemistry 1 and Physics 1 for some students.

Students who are required to take this co-requisite Math (101) class (see Math (101) Assessment Test information below) and either a) do not enroll or b) enroll and fail the class, will not receive either their Chemistry 1 or Physics 1 grades until a passing grade for this co-requisite course is secured. This may require re-enrollment in this online class and paying tuition for this class again.

Math (101) Assessment Test

All ISP students applying to General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 101) or Physics 1 (PHYS 101) classes are required to take the online math assessment test before enrollment in these classes regardless of having transcripts from a previous college-level math course.

All ISP students will be contacted by an ISP representative to schedule an appointment on the SCU campus to complete this assessment test.

Students who receive a grade of 60% or better on the online Math (101) assessment test are exempted from taking the online math co-requisite class.

Students who receive a grade of 59% or less on the online Math (101) assessment test and who DO have a transcript indicating a passing grade from a college level math course in the past four years are also exempted from taking the online math co-requisite class.

Students who receive a grade of 59% or less on the online Math (101) assessment test and who DO NOT have a transcript indicating a passing grade from a college level math course in the past four years are required to take the online Math (101) co-requisite class.
