Accelerated College Science Courses
We strongly believe that a solid foundation in basic sciences is essential to free-thinking participation in the world. It is also clear that this basic scientific preparation is essential to unlocking doors to a wide variety of healthcare professional opportunities such as nursing and physical therapy. To this end, the Integrated Science Program curriculum provides lower-division basic college sciences (General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology courses) in an intensive, weekend-based, immersion-learning format with ISP students matriculating in Saturday and Sunday classes for four consecutive weekends (from 8:30am-6:30pm). Our unique program promotes substantive integration of knowledge both within and across disciplines. Pre-professional adult students preparing of careers in nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant, medicine, pharmacy, and other medical fields acquire a powerful scaffold from which to pursue further studies in the biological or healing arts and sciences.
The Integrated Science Program weekend college science curriculum cultivates critical thinking and scientific reasoning by modeling this thinking in classroom Socratic dialogues that skillfully develop both the context and text for each subject. This edifying approach in small, intimate classes creates a collaborative learning dynamic among students and faculty. It also naturally maintains a high level of attention and interaction. Students are challenged to formalize their own intuition and experience of science.
Students attend class all day Saturday and Sunday for eight consecutive weekend days per subject (four consecutive weekends per course). This focused immersion on one college science class subject at a time and completion of the entire program in twelve months results in an expansive and unified assimilation of basic college sciences. Students leave our program with a deep and integrated knowledge of how each branch of the sciences form a unified whole simply because there is a relatively short amount of time between the first and last topic of thoughtful consideration in each subject and for the program as a whole.
Efficiently prepped laboratory exercises are designed to provide optimal hands-on experience with select methods, phenomena, and objects of study. There is virtually no trivial, busy work during lab and lab reports are completed outside of class. Each laboratory exercise begins with a preview and ends with a review of salient points. In addition to this, empirically-based independent study components of each subject enhance, deepen, and further integrate knowledge of the subject by developing different problem solving skills and conceptual organization than those fostered in classroom and laboratory learning.
Accelerated Science Course Accreditation and Acceptance
The Integrated Science Program is offered by Southern California University of Health Sciences, which is accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). Credits earned in Integrated Science Program courses have been accepted by medical, dental, nursing, osteopathic, chiropractic, podiatric, veterinary, pharmaceutical, acupuncture, naturopathic and physical therapy programs. Students have also used our courses to help them meet science requirements for completion of their undergraduate degrees. Before enrolling, students are advised to verify the acceptance of Integrated Science Program credits by the school or program to which entrance is planned by contacting the admissions director of the school. We would be happy to assist in verifying the acceptability of our units at the institution of your choice in any way we can.
Accelerated Weekend Science Courses and Scheduling
The courses are rigorous and intensive. A lot happens each day, therefore, attendance is mandatory for all lecture and laboratory sessions. All course lectures and laboratory sessions occur on weekends only, with classes running from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM both Saturday and Sunday. All basic science courses (General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology) meet for four consecutive weekends. Each day will have 3 hours of laboratory, scheduled differently for each course. Students will also work on two empirically based independent investigations to be completed by the end of each 4 weekend course. Final Exams for all ISP courses are offered in two different days and times: Tuesday at 3:00pm and Wednesday at 6:00pm, after the last weekend of classes. All Lab Finals are on the last Sunday of lab for each course. Please check the current calendar of accelerated science classes.
The suggested sequence for Integrated Science Program courses is: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology. General Chemistry at Integrated Science Program (or its equivalent from another college or university) is a prerequisite to, and must precede, Organic Chemistry.
Students who successfully complete the entirety of the ISP breadth of coursework in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Human Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology will receive a Basic Sciences Certificate acknowledging that they have an understanding of basic sciences necessary to pursue more in-depth or practical studies in specific areas of science. Students are tested frequently, as much as every other class meeting, and must be prepared to spend as much as 3 hours per day of concentrated study during the week to complete the assigned readings, problem assignments, post lab write-ups and papers. All of these learning activities are necessary to maintain progress and develop proficiency in the required subjects at hand.
